Liverpool 2013/14 season, the season that nearly was, the season where we got so close we could taste it, even though it was only 3 and half season ago where is that squad of players now ?
Still with us, but no longer the number one at the club and looks destined to be out the door this summer, he had a decent enough season in 2013/14 but since then he has only regressed.
A Backup keeper that always came across as a decent lad off the pitch but not one that you may trust on the pitch, he has gone on to make a decent career for himself in Holland, winning the Dutch league title with Feyenoord last season.
Hard to believe we nearly won a Premier League title with Glen Johnson as right back, he was always a favourite target for the tripper crew and would only stay one more season before moving on to Stoke where he currently resides in their medical department instead of ours.
Something tells me when Flanno retires he will be saying ” I will always have the 2013/14 season” , to be fair to the lad injury has ruined his career, for a while during that epic season he looked like he would make that left back spot his own, but injury and off the field behaviour has insured that this season will be his last at the club.
The hardest looking man at the club, and a player who scored 7 goals that season, unfortunately he found stopping the ball going into the net much harder then putting the ball into the net, he still stayed two more seasons after that but once Klopp came into the club his days were numbered, he can now be found in Turkey plying his trade with Fenerbache.
This guy still divides opinion, but after a drug ban (which was later overturned) to missing flights and dinner, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had enough of the French mans antics and soon moved him off to Crystal Palace.
We all know how that season finished for Stevie, like the rest of us it finished in tears as he slipped while trying to control a pass to let Demba Ba run in score and break all our hearts, after that season he give it one more push but when he realised it was just not going to happen for him he moved over to the USA, he picked up a couple of medals a lot of cash and is now back where he belongs at Liverpool as the u18 manager.
This was the season that probably launched Henderson’s Liverpool career, he was so impressive that season that when Stevie left there was only one man for the captains armband.
Injury and form and his curtailed his career over the last couple of seasons but he is still at the club and still captain, plus Jurgen Klopp seems to like him as a player.
We only bought him the January before for a bargain fee of £8.5m, Liverpool 2013/14 season was the year that Coutinho announced himself to the World stage, he picked up the name the magician and fans even knew then that it would not be long before Barcelona came sniffing.
And right they were, Coutinho moved to Barcelona this month for the 2nd biggest transfer fee of all time.
One of my fondest memories of that season was when Gerrard give that speech after the Man City game.
We will not let this go, we will not let this slip
And just seeing the big smile on Sterling’s face, you could see he was really enjoying his football and at such a young age had the world at his feet, then came along Manchester City with their millions and big contract offers.
And the smile soon turned into a full sulk, even giving an interview to the BBC saying that he wanted out of the club, he would soon get his wish and ever since he has gone on to player we all knew he would be.
It is easy to forget just how good Sturridge was that season, scoring 21 goals and involved in many more, he formed a prolific partnership with Suarez and many fans felt that when Suarez left that Sturridge would only step up his game another level.
Unfortunately it has not worked out that way for Daniel, another that injuries have curtailed his career with Liverpool, and the 3 and half seasons since that season he has only gone on to score 17 goals , an average of just under 5 goals a season.
Liverpool seems to have cut their losses on Sturridge, sending him on loan to WBA for a fee of £2m, will he ever return to Anfield? I for one doubt it.
If you are going through this list you must be asking yourself, how did we nearly win the league with this lot?
The answer is Luis Suarez
With 31 goals in 33 games, he did all he could to drag us to that league title, when he could not get us to the title he went off to the World Cup to lick his wounds and to make other wounds, once the World Cup was finished he was off to Barcelona where he has gone on to prove he truly is one of the Worlds best.
The squad of Liverpool 2013/14 season, led by a legend, an up and comer and a future World star if that group of players got so close to winning a league, no reason why the current crop could not go a step further.
